Story Overview of Alif Novel

Alif Novel By Umera Ahmed takes its name from the first letter of the Urdu alphabet — the single stroke from which all language, and by Sufi symbolism all being, flows. The novel follows Qalb-e-Momin, a celebrated but spiritually hollow man whose success has cost him his soul, and Momina Sultan, a woman of faith navigating a world that tests it. Their stories unfold in parallel before intertwining: his a descent that must become an ascent, hers a steadiness that must survive heartbreak.

The novel’s great movement is the passage from Ishq-e-Majazi to Ishq-e-Haqeeqi — from the love of the world to the love of God. Umera Ahmed does not preach this transformation; she dramatizes it, letting her characters’ choices, failures, and moments of grace carry the philosophy. Around the leads stand figures like Taha Abdul Ala and Husn-e-Jahan, each embodying a different relationship to faith, art, and ambition.

The Hum TV adaptation starring Hamza Ali Abbasi and Sajal Aly was praised for taking the novel’s spiritual ambition seriously, becoming one of the most acclaimed dramas of its year and introducing Alif’s message — that the straight path of the Alif leads home — to a vast new audience.
